Having refereed the FA Cup Final at Wembley, this makes 2 matches in 2 days for Stanley Rous before retirement.
Same venue, same opponents as 7 years earlier in the first of his 36(!) international matches (but Belgians won 2-0 then (link: ) ).
He was (1895-1986) an English sports teacher and amateur goalkeeper, well-known for being Sir and FIFA President (1961-74), but not for his major contribution to football as:

* developer (Belgian innovation actually) and establisher (being English FA’s Secretary) during ‘30s of the Diagonal Refereeing System (photo), not equalled yet
* main re-writer of “Laws of the Game” in simple form to be understood by all players, officials and fans, in 1938 (next revision 60 years later)
* “diplomat” who, along with Arthur Drewry, helps Jules Rimet to have the 4 British Associations re-joining FIFA in 1946 (after their 1928 resignation) and so the “World” Cup a proper World Cup from 1950. Not surprisingly, Drewery is elected FIFA President and when dies, Rous succeeds him.
King of England shouldn’t have liked football, since he only knights Rous a Sir after …helping in 1948 London’s Olympics as member of Organising Committees. Even so, he is the first-ever “footballing Sir”, with only 13 to follow since then and just 3, like Rous, being not players or managers.
