Playing at home, the Azzurri had the help of "whistle friend" of the Swiss René Mercet to eliminate Spain in the quarterfinals. The referee did not curb the violent style of play the hosts. 25min after just the first step, the attacker Bosch took a blow to Monti and spent the rest of the game limping. Then, since the second half, the referee annulled two seemingly legitimate goals of the Spanish team, which finished out of the tournament.
