Scotland goalkeeper McLaughlin was ’unattached’ as his contract with Hearts ended on 31st May 2000. See at the attached interview with him two days after the match vs Mexico.
It was confirmed also on his page of Wikipedia.

Obviously the end of contract of McLaughlin at Hearts was on 31st May 2018 instead of 2000 as I wrongly posted on 23 August.
