- West German goalkeeper Heinz Kwiatkowski was only in his second World Cup match. The first time was four years previously when he played in goal in the 3-8 defeat against Hungary and then he had conceded four goals from Sandor Kocsis who won the 1954 top scorer prize. This time round he conceded another six goals and yet again suffered four goals from Just Fontaine who topped the 1958 top-scorer list with 13 goals.
