 | toniofarrugia - posted 26.12.2012 17:59:30 - 1 The Mexican player who committed the own goal in favour of Italy was Javier Guzmán and not Gustavo Peña as all sources say. One can watch the video on the link hereunder (from 30 seconds to 50 seconds) and one can notice that it is clearly player number 14 Javier Guzmán that in the action leading to the goal he first shadowed Luigi Riva and even managed to clear the ball away from his feet, then the same Javier Guzmán stood in the way of the shot by Domenghini and deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper Ignacio Calderón. Player number 3 Gustavo Peña, clearly recognizable as he was also wearing the captain’s armband, is nowhere near the ball and only comes into the scene from the opposite direction and just kicks again the ball into the net in frustration.
Only the FIFA webpage reports the autogoal correctly. All other sources state that it was Gustavo Pena that committed the autogoal. A bad error.
